Him indoors has discovered contactless payment. How very convenient for him. She who must be obeyed is less pleased. The monthly bank statement has grown by 50%. A whole two sides of items to be looked into in case someone is pilfering from our current account. Of course they were from our previous bank account and we didn’t even notice. Those small monthly direct debits must be something arranged by him indoors. Except when we closed down that bank account nothing changed and no one asked us for the monthly amounts. Lesson learnt? Don’t be ridiculous – surely I have better things to do with my life than dig too deep into the minutiae of our lives.
I did once create a ledger of our expenses, but after 6 months I was so depressed at the hugeness of our outgoings that I had to stop. Far better to go back to burying my head in the sand. Him indoors wouldn’t notice any of the above.
We used to have a joint account but wanting my own money I opened a separate account and paid myself a housekeeping amount from the joint account so that I could save anything left over as being mine (all mine!) But, I couldn’t quite balance the books, so I had to make an extra balancing payment from the joint account. After 6 months of this, this too depressed me too much, so I had to give up my own personal account. Throughout all this him indoors was oblivious.
Is there a lesson in all this? Please don’t offer any suggestions.
